Brian Calhoun

NFL Draft News

Brian Calhoun RB 5'9 201 Wisconsin
By: Robert Davis

Brian Calhoun started his career at Colorado, and did some nice things as a Buffalo. During his sophomore season he started to show big time potential, rushing for 810 yards and five touchdowns to go along with 32 receptions for 266 yards and one touchdown. He then decided to return home to Wisconsin, and transferred to UW. After sitting out the 2004 season, he came through with a huge 2005 campaign. He ran the ball 348 times for 1,636 yards and an amazing 22 touchdowns. Calhoun continued to show his versatility, also being a factor as a receiver by hauling in 53 passes for 571 yards and two touchdowns.

Calhoun's combination of rushing and receiving skills makes him one of the best dual threat backs in the draft. As a runner he has displayed excellent quickness and the ability to make people miss. If you give him a seam, he has shown the speed to take it the distance. Calhoun has also shown he can be a workhorse, as evidenced by toting the rock 348 times in the Big 10. He is a very good interior runner and has no problems running between the tackles. Calhoun has very good hands out of the backfield and is a legitimate threat as a receiver.

At just over 5'9 and 200lbs, Calhoun's size is a big question mark. Despite being very effective running between the tackles, his size raises questions about his ability to handle the load as a feature back.

If Calhoun were a bit bigger, he's a first round prospect. His running and receiving ability are not in question. Although he has proven to be successful as a workhorse at his size, he will still have to prove himself at the next level. Even if he cannot be a feature back, his quickness and receiving ability will make him a threat as a change of pace back. Calhoun will hear his name called in the second or third round, but his impact could be on par with a few of the backs taken ahead of him.
