Charles Gordon

NFL Draft News

Charles Gordon CB 5'10 183 Kansas Jr.
By: Robert Davis

How many players can boast All American honors as wide receiver, cornerback, and as a return man? Charles Gordon can. He earned freshman AA honors after catching 57 passes for 769 yards and five touchdowns. As a sophomore, he was an AA corner, but did double duty. As a corner he had 57 tackles and seven interceptions. As a receiver, he had 15 receptions for 150 yards, and two touchdowns. Gordon split time again as a junior, hauling in 34 passes for 313 yards, and two touchdowns on offense. On defense, he had 28 tackles, two for loss, a sack, and two interceptions.

Charles Gordon is one of the truly elite athletes in the draft. He has been a standout in every spot he's lined up in. His NFL future is on defense though. He has excellent quickness, and shows the ability to easily turn and cover, and the speed to follow down the field. He has a nose for the ball, and has the ability to be a big time playmaker. Gordon has the confidence to get out on the field and know that he is a difference maker, no matter what he is asked to do. He is tough and will not back down from any challenge. His ability as a kick and punt return man only enhances his value.

The bouncing around between wideout and corner his limited his development. His aggressiveness and inexperience causes him to bite on fakes and go for the big play too often.

Had Gordon focused solely on the corner position, he could be a first round talent. The only thing that has kept him from that ranking is the constant double duty he did at Kansas, but that just shows his true athletic gifts. Gordon could be a solid nickel guy early on, and should be a special teams standout, being a playmaker on both kick and punt returns. A 4.6 40 at the combine moved him down from a guaranteed Top 60 selection, but you could still hear his name called on the first day.
