Gerris Wilkinson

NFL Draft News

Gerris Wilkinson LB 6'3 233 Georgia Tech
By: Robert Davis

After a true freshman season in which he hardly played, Wilkinson started his last 37 games for the Yellow Jackets. As a sophomore in 2003, he started 13 games at defensive end and finished the year with 47 tackles, 12 for loss, and four sacks. He moved to linebacker as a junior, and came through with a fantastic season. He earned All ACC honors after posting 119 tackles, 17 for loss, 4.5 sacks, and one interception. Wilkinson went out in style as a senior, again earning All ACC honors along with All American status after a 85 tackle, nine for loss, four sack, and two interception season.

Wilkinson brings a lot of versatility to the field. He has lined up inside, outside, and with his hand down at defensive end in college. He is a very good athlete, who displays the agility and speed on the field to be a playmaker. He has a great frame for a linebacker, with plenty of room for extra growth. Gerris is at his best when he gets to attack the line of scrimmage, whether stuffing the run or going after the quarterback.

After spending time at three different positions, Wilkinson is not refined at any one spot. He is tentative when he has to cover, even though he has all the talent to do the job. He'll need time to focus on one position. He will also need to bulk up more, because he is very lean and has some problems holding up at the point of attack. If he remains at inside linebacker, he will have to take on blocks on every play, and will need to get stronger to handle those duties.

Gerris Wilkinson has the talent to project inside or outside. He will need some work but his versatility and upside will intrigue a lot of teams. He could hear his name called in the third round at some point.
