Leon Williams

NFL Draft News

Leon Williams LB 6'3 245 Miami
By: Robert Davis

After backing up for two seasons, Leon Williams took over for Jonathan Vilma. Those were big shoes to fill, but Williams did an admirable job. As a junior, Williams played with an injured hand all year but still managed to finish the season with 56 tackles, eight for loss, and 2.5 sacks. He followed that up with an almost identical season as a senior, closing his career out with 54 tackles, four of them coming for loss.

Williams is a true physical specimen. He has very good size, with room for more growth. Along with that size, he is an excellent athlete, and shows excellent speed on the football field. He can chase plays up and down the line of scrimmage. Williams has the ability to play in space and cover, or react and attack the ball carrier in front of him. His athleticism gives him the versatility to play any linebacker spot.

After sitting for two seasons behind Vilma, it has left Williams with only two years of real experience on the field. As a result, he is still learning the position. He will have problems getting off blocks and does not react as quickly as you would like.

Leon Williams had a solid final two seasons at Miami, and has a lot of room for improvement. His lack of experience could be the reason for him being hesitant at times. His physical talent though could allow a team to move him around and maximize his talent in different roles. After running a 4.54 at 245lbs. at the combine, Williams could hear his name called in the third round come April.
