Maurice Drew

NFL Draft News

Maurice Drew RB 5'7 207 UCLA Jr.
By: Robert Davis

NFL Combine Stats: 40-yard dash - 4.39, 225 bench press - 18 reps, vertical jump - 36"

There aren't many players as versatile and explosive as Maurice Drew. He made an immediate impact for the Bruins as a true freshman, rushing for 582 yards and five touchdowns. His biggest impact came on special teams though, as he averaged 15.2 yards per punt return with one of them being returned for a touchdown, and averaged 26.6 yards per kick return, taking two of them to the house. As a sophomore he took on a bigger rushing load, which cut back on his return game. He ran for 1,007 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground to go with 262 yards receiving on 18 catches. Drew put it all together this year, rushing for 914 yards on the ground for 13 touchdowns and 453 yards and 4 TD's on 31 catches. He also averaged 28.5 yards per punt return, taking three of them back for touchdowns.

Drew's versatility is his best asset. He can help you on the ground, as a receiver, as a punt returner, and kick returner. He is a big play threat in every facet as well. Drew has excellent quickness, agility, and speed. With the ball in his hands, he is a playmaker in every sense of the word. He shows the ability to run between the tackles, and the ability to turn the corner. As a receiver, he displays soft hands and is a legit threat out of the backfield.

There is one glaring weakness in Drew's game: his size. He is only listed at 5'8 205, but appears smaller. That has caused durability problems in college, and may continue to do so in the NFL. His game is likely only suited for a third down and special teams role.

Maurice Drew will be a valuable performer for some team in the NFL. His playmaking ability in a variety of roles will be attractive to a lot of teams. He will likely never be an everydown back, but should be a standout as a change of pace back and return man. Drew could hear his name called in the third round somewhere.
