New Free Agency Winners and Losers

Matt Trannon TE/WR 6'6 216 Michigan St. 4.58

By: Robert Davis

Matt Trannon is one of the best two sport college athletes in the country. He stars for the football team, but also plays for the Spartan basketball program. On the gridiron in 2003, he hauled in 28 passes for 259 yards. As a sophomore he became more involved in the offense, finishing with 36 catches for 405 yards and two touchdowns. As a junior, Trannon had career highs across the board with 40/573/4 on the year. He had a solid senior season, finishing with 44 catches for 518 yards and three touchdowns. He has spent three seasons on the hardwood as well, and had career highs with 4.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game last year.

The first thing you notice about Trannon is his obvious combination of fantastic size and excellent athleticism. He has excellent size for a wide receiver, and the frame to pack on more weight to play tight end. His athleticism makes him a nightmare matchup in coverage, and allows him to play big time college basketball as well. Trannon has good straightline speed for a player his size, and can move down the field and be a vertical threat. He is very tough and could be an excellent red zone option in the NFL.

While he has the speed and athleticism to play WR in college, he may not have the agility to play WR at the next level. He needs to gather himself in and out of his breaks, and will not be able to get separation against NFL defensive backs. If he switches to tight end, he will have to learn how to block and go up against players bigger than he is, instead of lining up against much smaller defenders.

Trannon is a player that has a lot of upside at the next level. He has the talent to be a major weapon in the receiving game once he devotes all his time to the game of football. He will need work on his all around game at the next level, but his upside as a playmaker will draw a lot of interest on Day Two.
