New Free Agency Winners and Losers

Terrence Wheatley CB 5’10 185 Colorado

By: Robert Davis

Wheatley showcased his potential as a freshman, finishing the season with 24 tackles with five pass break ups. A year later, he developed into one of the better corners in the Big 12, picking off four passes to go along with 33 tackles. He sat out the 2005 season due to a wrist injury. He first had surgery in the spring, then needed surgery in August, ending his season. Wheatley bounced back last year, finishing the season with a career high 57 tackles, five INT’s, and 11 passes broken up. As a senior, he finished with 42 tackles, one for loss, and five interceptions.

Wheatley is an excellent cover corner. He is a very good athlete, that has very good quickness and change of direction skills. He can mirror a receiver in and out of his routes, and has the speed to stay stride for stride with them down the field. He also shows quality ball skills, being able to locate the ball in the air and go up for it. Wheatley is also aggressive in run support, and not afraid to come up and throw his body around to stop the ball carrier.

The first issue with Wheatley is his lack of ideal size. He is not as big as his listed size, and he will not be able to match up with bigger, more physical receivers in the NFL. It may also hinder his ability in run support, because he will not be able to get off blocks or bring down bigger ball carriers on a consistent basis. Wheatley has also had a nagging wrist problem throughout his career with the Buffs. He has had numerous surgeries, including two that made him sit out the 2005 season. He will need to prove that there is nothing wrong with his wrist in the post season with his medical reports.

Wheatley is a very good prospect as a cover corner, but he has his limitations. He could push for a selection on Day One if he checks out well medically. That wrist will have a big impact on his draft position.
